Sì Jì, Reflected (2009-2010)
"Malia Jane French, a colleague and friend, asked, somewhat in jest, for me to write her a song cycle. A couple of months later, I surprised her with this set, a group of Rexroth's translations of ancient Chinese poetry. The goal in the text was to represent the seasons. To avoid the cliché inherent in writing anything about the seasons, I put an interesting twist on it. Instead of writing the seasons in order; spring, summer, fall, winter; I chose to write them in reverse order, exploring the seasons from a different perspective. Hence the word 'reflected' in the title. This piece was premiered in spring of 2010 at Malia and my joint Junior Recital. Josh Wright, a brilliant young pianist, accompanied Malia in the premiere. A learning experience and a milestone, this piece is very close to me, and remains one of my favorite compositons."
