"In 2008, I decided to enter Seattle-based choir the Esoterics' 'Polyphonos' composition competition. Unfortunately, I sometimes try to see how far I can stretch the directions I am given, and my entry was disqualified because I did not meet the parameters. However, the entry resulted in some of my favorite music I have composed. Among their requests was a piece with a text in a more obscure language. Nahautl was the ancient language of the Aztecs. This text, in Nahautl, combines the ancient with the less ancient. The text celebrates the birth of Christ. While I tend to avoid penning Christmas music, this text called out to me, and resulted in sumptuous, lulling music that can be performed any time of the year."
